BALANCE: THE HUMAN RUBIK’S CUBE.

Finding the perfect balance in life, health and work is like solving a Rubik’s cube. There are some people that seem to do it well, but the majority of us are trying to figure out how to get all the sides lined up. One person’s balance may not work well for the next. “Balance” looks different to each individual. It’s important not to compare your balance to someone else’s. We all have different schedules, responsibilities, and availability.

The truth is, having complete balance all of the time is virtually impossible. But finding a system and schedule that works well for you isn’t. It’s difficult to put your 100% self into everything that you’re doing. That typically results in burn out and it takes a lot more steam to come back from a burn out than not. Not having complete balance doesn’t mean you’re out of control. It typically means you have a strong focus on a particular area of your life. It also means you’re a human.

I have seasons of balance. Sometimes I’m really focused on growing Worx. Other times I need a break from that and I put my efforts into being outside and running around more. Sometimes I’m really craving family time. Heck, sometimes I just want to enjoy a day by myself. Please don’t beat yourself up for not being everything to everyone all the time, including yourself.

I couldn’t tell you the last time that I exercised every day, went to work, had a home-made dinner on the table, cleaned my house, visited my friends, hung out with family and perfectly tucked everyone in each night. That sounds exhausting just thinking about it. Last week alone I cooked once. Not because I didn’t want to, but because I didn’t plan. Thank you Dominos’ for supporting our crazy life.

While the perfect life balance may not exist, there are a few things I like to fold into the mix that help me feel accomplished:

Plan – dinner alone is like a battle without gear. Plan ahead – what’s on the menu and how can you simplify your cooking. Crockpot anyone? Busy day, what do you need to get done? Planning helps you know what needs to be done ahead of time so you can schedule it in.

Communicate – when you’re going to be busy focusing on something, let those around you know. When I have something big I’m working on with work, I tell my husband. He knows where my attention is going to be and isn’t blindsided when I’m on the computer at 11 pm.

Accept – Don’t beat yourself up. We’re all trying to find balance. But if we all accept that we don’t have to be everything to everyone, the pressure will lift and we can all live healthier happier lives. Like Ellen DeGeneres says, “Be kind to one another.”

Make a good honest effort to do good. Make sure you’re eating food and drinking water. Go to bed at a reasonable time. Be present when you’re with someone (put that phone away). The sooner you’re able to accept that you are only one human, the sooner you’ll find peace and happiness. Presence is the best balance you can give yourself and anyone around you.
